Zero Harm to plant, people and environment is our ultimate focus and is an important driver for continuous improvement in health and safety performance, across Tata Steel Colors. Zero Harm is the core belief for all our Safety Management Systems. Our Health and Safety Policy is the foundation for driving safety consciousness within the Company and amongst all our stakeholders. A robust management system framework and a sound safety governance structure drive this policy. To achieve our corporate objective of ‘Zero Harm’, six long-term safety strategies have been prioritised and are being implemented through Central Safety Committees across organisation. The progress is monitored and reviewed at different levels.

Key Initiatives undertaken to ensure Zero harm

Development of Real and Measurable HSE Targets: Based on Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Policy of the organization, a Safety Plan has been developed, that gives direction to the activities being performed:

1. Zero LTI & MTI
2. Safety audit achieved on time
3. Minimise HSE risks through
- Risk assessment & identification of required controls before start of new activity
- Engineering controls
- Administrative control
- Hire and placement
- Periodic inspection and preventive maintenance of equipment
- Optimum utilization of raw materials & consumables
- Procurement of equipment, materials etc. with environmental considerations in focus

Safety Training programs for all employees before inducting on-site or within the organisation

Regular Safety Audits on-site and in workplaces

Safety Competency and Capability Improvement

1. Business Leaders Safety Coaching Program conducted by BlueScope, Australia representative for Senior Managers
2. Upgradation of IT system to analyse the organisation’s safety performance in more flexible and transparent ways by introducing the web based platform

Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene

1. Real time and location-based health monitoring of employees or contract labours
2. Doctor on-site initiatives
3. Industrial hygiene projects
4. Special health programme for women employees Safety Week celebrations

Development of Safety Leadership

1. Establishment of safety governance committees to drive safety
2. HSE Committee steered by top management
3. Implementation of world class safety practices through Safety Management System and Codes of Practices for various activities

Role of Safety Committee

Safety in Tata Steel Colors is top driven. Central safety Committee consists of the Senior Leadership Team including the Managing Director and all the stake holders of the organization, responsible for implementing and reviewing the safety in plants and off-side construction sites. Monthly review meeting agenda includes Safety KPIs, LTI, MTI – Target Vs Actuals, Safety performance of each of the plant, offsite construction sites, Environmental performance – Electricity consumption, water consumption, CHG emission, review of safety incidences SSOs (Significant Safety Occurrences), if any, major safety violations (severity 4 & 5) at off- site construction with detail of violation and corrective actions etc. to name a few. A robust management system framework and a sound safety governance structure drive our health and safety measures. So far, in India, our PEB business has delivered more than thousand projects for multinational clients such as Unilever, P&G, Ford, DuPont, BOSCH, GE, Colgate-Palmolive, Carlsberg to name a few, with 7.8 million LTI free man-hour at project sites. Reiterating our contribution towards Safety, LYSAGHT® was recognized in 2017, with the CIDC Vishwakarma Award for Safety, Health and Environment for its Tata Steel Kalinganagar Project.
